World Book Day was another wonderful way for everyone at Greenfield Community College to celebrate reading. Reading plays a vital role in learning and is an integral part of the teaching and learning at Greenfield Community College. Students are provided with a dedicated space to read for 20 minutes each and every day during the Time For Success programme. This programme, which is part of the school’s curriculum, promotes the skills and attributes needed to be the best learners that students can be. Reading every day for 20 minutes has proven to increase reading and writing skills and in some cases has improved reading by two years.
Greenfield enjoy celebrating World Book Day and have developed many projects to support reading including our speak up for writing initiative across the whole school, which is having a great impact. Students have produced amazing results in previous years including building little libraries across the county, creating anthologies, poetry books and some students have worked with artists to create ‘suitcase libraries’ which have been used to explore ideas and create new work. Greenfield develop creative approaches to learning and regularly work with many authors and writers to support students to thrive.
Accelerated Reader is one powerful tool used at Greenfield to help monitor and manage independent reading practice and helps to motivate students to read for pleasure. The leaderboard is showing impressive statistics as each word read is recorded; Year 7 student Courtney May, has read an impressive 3,490,735 words “I like reading at Greenfield to learn and to sit down and relax with a book” said Courtney. Student Ethan Berry (Year 9) has read 2,321,496, Lucy Heron (Year 7) 2,219085, Sophie Lenegon (Year 7) 1,856,600, Adam Gibson (Year 7), 1,447,885 and at least another eight students over both sites on a million words read. “We couldn’t be prouder of these results and to see how all of this dedication to reading pays off - not only in English but most other subjects also.
